In exciting news, yesterday a group of us worked with Dr. Wendy Robertson, our partner hydrologist, to install gauges for monitoring water inputs into Ore Lake! We have been working to begin this data collection for the past 1.5 years and have finally reached our goal to gather flow and discharge data! Thank you to all involved and a particular shout out to Wendy for your help and guidance, community members who helped build and install the gauges, Claire Zarakas who connected our community with our partner hydrologists, and Diane Henry for helping get our organization up and running! And thank you to the Thriving Earth Exchange for providing the resources to help our community!

Be prepared, we are projected to get 2-4″ of rain in the next few days. As of right now, the projection is for major flooding with the river forecast to crest at 7.9 feet Sunday or Monday. Make sure you move items to higher ground and secure objects so they don’t float away. We are excited to share that Saturday we met with Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin to discuss our concerns about regional flooding! It was a productive meeting with her and our local leaders discussing our next steps for monitoring water inputs into Ore Lake, as well as getting support for our FEMA BRIC/FMA application and addressing the NFIP lack of disclosures of flood claims. Thank you Rep. Slotkin for supporting and addressing our community concerns!

Thank you to all who attended Saturday’s Community Flooding Event. We had a great turnout – over 50 people attended! It was great to hear everyone’s concerns, questions, and thoughtful ideas for addressing our flooding issues. We will have a follow-up event in the coming weeks.

The Huron River / Ore Lake flooding has been receiving some coverage in the local media.

WDIV Channel 4 from Detroit has run a couple of stories on the flooding in our area.

A serious flooding condition continues along the Huron River and Ore Lake. According to the USGS gauge on the Huron River at the Hamburg Road bridge, the river crested on Sunday, August 16th at a height 8.05 feet, which is a foot and a half above flood stage at 6.5 feet. Current projection has the level slowly falling and remaining above flood stage for at least a week.
